Need hosting solution with following:Php:4.3.10+ , mysql 4.1, Linux Box, SSH enabled, SVN client?

Need hosting solution with following:Php:4.3.10+ , mysql 4.1, Linux Box, SSH enabled, SVN client, need root account. Need a dedicated solution.

If you actually do need a dedicated server, try http://www.rackspace.com which basically sells you the box and a backbone connection, nothing more. What you have on the box is up to you.

Or, you could go to http://www.dreamhost.com which sells dedicated server hosting that’s more managed. Again, what you put on the box is up to you.

Otherwise, it will be difficult to find shared hosting with the items you describe, since the PHP and MySQL versions you cite are seriously outdated.

Are there any free webpage hosting sites that allow ftp or ssh access?

January 23, 2010 ssh hosting 2 Comments

The motive behind the question being: I have created many photo albums, I want to upload them to some website, but I don’t want to upload photo by photo… yahoo photos, flickr, etc. don’t have such an option … if I could upload my entire directory structure, i figured things could work… for the web experts, are there any better alternatives?

powweb has an awesome script that builds entire image gallery websites. You could host hundreds or even thousands of premium photogalleries there

[Latvian] Linux Shell basics for fast hosting needs part 2 of 2

January 17, 2010 ssh hosting No Comments

Part 2 of 2 (Latvian)
Some tiny tutorial i made for boys who hosts on my server, on how to use Bash scripting trough putty SSH, to majorly speed up their creations. SSH provides much more than any FTP clients, that includes SHELL SCRIPTS (SH), CRON, File manipulation, WGET to download files directly to hosting using 1Gbps speed even if they connect with 28k modem, thus not wasting their bandwidth. Also it’s possible to edit files On-The-Go using VI command, saving from DLing-Editing-ReUploading files, but that is not included in this tutorial.

Linux HOWTO #2: Access your desktop remotely using VNC/SSH

January 16, 2010 ssh hosting 12 Comments

LINUX HOWTO 2nd installment (Errata: see below)

This is the second installment in a new series called Linux HOWTOS. Every week I will post a video explaining how to accomplish something using a GNU/Linux operating system. Please write requests for installments in the comments!

Have you ever wished you could access your desktop from another computer over the internet? There are many proprietary programs that allow you to do this, but Linux has all the tools you need to accomplish this securely, effectively, and for free. All you need is SSH (included in most Linux distros) and a VNC server. This video explains how to install and configure the software so you can access your desktop from anywhere, even on a windows PC (use PUTTY: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ and TightVNC http://www.tightvnc.com )

If you have any questions, please ask in the comment field, and I or someone else will do our best to answer. Please avoid ‘RTFM’-style answers. They are not welcome. Also please post corrections if I mistakenly give some wrong information.

Network configuration can be tricky and I certainly didn’t have time in the video to consider different networking hardware setups. If you try VNC over SSH and have some problems, feel free to leave a question in the comments.

***Errata***
./vncinstall must be run as a root user:

$ pwd
/usr/src/tightvnc-1.3.9/vnc_unixsrc
$ su root
Password: *******
# ./vncinstall /usr/local/bin /usr/local/man
************

There was a request to see a list of the commands used in this video, so here they are:

(install vnc)
cd /usr/src/tightvnc-1.3.9
tar -xjf *bz2
cd vnc*
xmkmf
make World
cd Xvnc
./configure
make
cd ..
su
./vncinstall /usr/local/bin /usr/local/man
vncpasswd

(start ssh)
service sshd start (may be different on your distro)
exit
ssh -L 10101:ip-or-host:590? -p port# ip-or-host
vncserver :? (same ? as previous line)

(new terminal)
vncviewer localhost::10101
