Is there a difference between web hosting and web server?

January 27, 2010 web server hosting 3 Comments

I am looking to transfer my website from a friends to a server of my own. Not sure what the difference is between hosting and server. Also would appreciate any recommendations.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

The term web server can mean one of two things:
1. A computer program that is responsible for accepting HTTP requests from web clients, which are known as web browsers, and serving them HTTP responses along with optional data contents, which usually are web pages such as HTML documents and linked objects (images, etc.).
2. A computer that runs a computer program as described above.

Can anyone suggest the best server for Web hosting for a business site?

January 23, 2010 web server hosting No Comments

Hi
I have read about different web hosting services available, but not sure of the best server to host my site. Among the normal requirements essential for the site, I would also like to avoid external spams, ads and want the best service that is available.
Could anyone help me in this regard.
Thanks,
Raja

Go with www.frevety.net. They have an amazing deal. Get 600gb monthly bandwidth, 75000mb of storage, and host up to 25 different web sites for just $90 every 14 months (that’s $6.43 per month). They list it as $7.50 per month, but then they later throw in another 2 months. Best deal anywhere hands down. Their customer support replies within 30 minutes every time as well!

Root access question?

January 16, 2010 windows vps hosting 3 Comments

<Fast Summary>

SSH login works from another Linux terminal, and always fails from my Windows computer.

</Fast Summary>

“““““““`
This makes no sense to me, please help:

1) If I’m logged into my {other VPS} with Putty, then
ssh root@67.xx.xx.xxx
successfully logs me into {new VPS}, after the password prompt, so I know the root password can login (some of the time)

2) …but not my Windows computer, both Putty, and SFTP fail.
The SFTP error message is :
"ERROR:> [7/31/2009 9:48:08 AM] Can’t connect to 67.xx.xx.xxx:22. SFTP21 error = #0."
Port 22 is correct, according to hosting support.

3a) Hosting support said…
"Based on the information you have provided to us, I am assuming that either your firewall or ISP is blocking the standard 22 SSH port. If you would like, we can change this to a custom port number."

3b) That response doesn’t help, since I’m using port 22 for the {other VPS}

Like I said, This makes no sense to me, please help.
Thank you.
EDIT:

"Root should NEVER be allowed to login to anything…."

1) It is a brand new account, and I intend to use SSH keys for login ASAP.

2) The login *works* from another Linux terminal, and not from my home computer.
Why?

3) I can login to other Linux terminals from my Windows machine.
4) No I don’t know the exact protocol, just that the default works from Linux and not windows.
>>> I *can* login to other Linux terminals from my Windows machine, so port 22 is not blocked <<<

1. Root should NEVER be allowed to login to anything.

2. Are you using the default configuration of PuTTY? Did they specify what authentication method is supposed to be used? Which SSH protocol?

Server characteristics for online shop?

January 16, 2010 windows vps hosting 1 Comment

Hello everybody,

If you know, could you tell me which are the most suitable characteristics, when buying windows hosting, for a bookstore shop (selling books, cds, dvds, games, etc), that will use ASP and MS SQL?

I’m wondering about disk space, bandwidth, shared hosting, VPS, dedicated server, etc, among other things. I’ve seen many solutions but would not wish to follow one which is too expensive for the shop needs.

The shop will do its business in a country of no more that 15 million people by a rather small company.

Thanks in advance.

If you are using .NET in anyway
NO APACHE or Redhat services will do

there are many good Win server hosters out there
as low as 6.95 a month for decent service

shops are low bandwidth users
unless you use on line chat and forums as well

your service should be more diskspace at reasonable bandwidth
unlimited bandwidth service is usually only 100 meg
goes quick with databases

and aspx driven websites

respond to me and i’ll give ya a couple of good vendors
not going to post here its unfair to market

i need HELM control panel version 4 master reseller web hosting. where big space bandwidth and small prices?

January 16, 2010 windows vps hosting 2 Comments

i need a HELM 4 master reseller web hosting account. tell me a reliable root company which provides big space and monthly transfer at small prices, i already lost a huge amount in different fake companies…i need a popular company which is working best from years. i can also afford windows VPS but with small price but HELM is neccessory. please help me out.

Honestly, It is just not worth it to go with any one site without doing your research first. You should consider going to a website like http://www.webhostgumbo.com … They have an up to date pricing and incentives comparison chart for the top 2008 web hosting companies starting at $3.96 per month with free for life domain names, plus you get $25 back when you choose your web host. Always do your research before you buy. Good luck

Thanks.

hi – best thing for you to do is really to take a look at www.forum2.co.uk – its a great ressource for webhosting in UK, with good offers and discussions about different providers.

I run a hosting company, www.uk2.net – one of the biggest in UK, but we currently do not provide windows hosting :)

Best of luck.

VPS, windows or linux?

January 16, 2010 windows vps hosting 2 Comments

Thinking about taking a VPS and i have the options of windows or linux.
I have various sites to install and for most of them it does not matter to me which i use. However i also wish to offer a free and aid hosting service. For end users, which is best, and what are the differences?

I would go with Linux. Linux has a lot of free software compared to Windows. There’s a control panel called cPanel that only runs on Linux so having it installed will definitely land you some sales. It’s easy to use and powerful.

With Windows, you’ll not only need to pay extra for the OS but also for MSSQL, IIS, etc. Some free software does run on Windows but it is not as stable.

How do you setup OpenVPN with FreeBSD + PF and Windows?

January 16, 2010 windows vps hosting 1 Comment

I need to setup an OpenVPN server to provide access to my linux vps hosting cluster , giving windows clients access to the internal network. Does anyone know how to do this?

OpenVPN with FreeBSD, PF and Windows

This howto is a quick a dirty guide to building OpenVPN on a FreeBSD box (running pf as the firewall), and then connecting a Windows XP client to it. Server Install
[edit] Install the port

cd /usr/ports/security/openvpn
make install

[edit] Start setting stuff up

First edit your /etc/rc.conf and add the following line:-

openvpn_enable=”YES”

Now create the config files, which we will place in /usr/local/etc/openvpn:-

cd /usr/local/etc/
mkdir openvpn
cd openvpn

vim openvpn.conf

Place this into your config file:-

# Specify device
dev tun

# Server and client IP and Pool
server 10.8.0.0 255.255.255.0
ifconfig-pool-persist ipp.txt

# Certificates for VPN Authentication
ca /usr/local/etc/openvpn/keys/ca.crt
cert /usr/local/etc/openvpn/keys/server.crt
key /usr/local/etc/openvpn/keys/server.key
dh /usr/local/etc/openvpn/keys/dh1024.pem

# Routes to push to the client
push "route 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0"

# Use compression on the VPN link
comp-lzo

# Make the link more resistant to connection failures

keepalive 10 60
ping-timer-rem
persist-tun
persist-key

# Run OpenVPN as a daemon and drop privileges to user/group nobody user nobody
group nobody
daemon

[edit] Creating Certificates

cp -r /usr/local/share/doc/openvpn/easy-rsa /home/myuser/ cd /home/myuser/easy-rsa

Now edit the “vars” file to set your specific details and set the environment variables you have just created and build the Certificate Authority certificates:-

NOTE: Very Important Step for FreeBSD/TCSH users

FreeBSD ships with tcsh as its native shell, at the time of writing the following scripts do not work. To get around this you must drop down to a bourne shell. To do this just type the following at a prompt:-

sh

Now you can carry on with building the certificates, once you have built them you can exit back out to tcsh.

. vars
./clean-all
./build-ca

You will have to answer a few questions on the last step, once this has been done your CA certs will be created in the keys subdirectory.

Generate certificate & key for server:-

./build-key-server server

Again answer the questions and the certs will be placed in the keys subdirectory.

Generate certificates & keys for 3 clients (each client will require their own certificates, if multiple clients log in with the same certs then they will be assigned the same ips and will kick each other off the network):-

Generating client certificates is very similar to the previous step. You need to ensure that all your details are the same as for the CA, apart from the common name, which needs to be different for each client. For the sake of clarity this should relate to person who is assigned this vpn certificate. All of these details can be found in keys/server.crt for the server and keys/client*.crt for the client details.

./build-key client1
./build-key client2
./build-key client3

Generate Diffie Hellman parameters

Diffie Hellman parameters must be generated for the OpenVPN server:-

./build-dh

Now copy the whole keys directory to /usr/local/etc/openvpn:-

cp -r keys /usr/local/etc/openvpn/

[edit] Logging

Before starting OpenVPN I also moved the logging (which defaults to /var/log/messages). Edit syslog.conf:-

vim /etc/syslog.conf

Add the following entry:-

!openvpn
*.* /var/log/openvpn.log

Create log file:-

touch /var/log/openvpn.log

Restart syslogd:-

killall -HUP syslogd

Now start OpenVPN:-

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/openvpn.sh start

Check /var/log/openvpn.log for errors, then check that the device has been created. Mine looks like this:-

[achilles] ~# ifconfig tun0
tun0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet6 fe80::2d0:b7ff:fe49:b2bb%tun0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0×5
inet 10.8.0.1 –> 10.8.0.2 netmask 0xffffffff
Opened by PID 43878

[edit] Firewall Configuration

Now we need to alter PF to handle the VPN, below are the relevant sections of my /etc/pf.conf file:-

# VPN Interface
vpn_if="tun0"

# VPN Network
vpn_network="10.8.0.0/24"

# NAT the VPN connections (for access to the remote secure networks)
nat on $ext_if from $vpn_network to any -> ($ext_if)

# VPN connections inbound
pass in on $ext_if proto udp from any to port 1194 keep state
pass quick on $vpn_if

Now restart PF and your server will be ready for connections
[edit] Client setup

First download and install the GUI version of the client, which can be found here:-

http://www.openvpn.se

Once this is installed you will need to copy the following files from your server /usr/local/etc/openvpn/keys directory to the Windows PC C:\Program Files\Openvpn\config directory (this should be done in as secure a manner as possible, i.e. USB Stick or floppy rather than email!!!):-

ca.crt
client1.crt
client1.key

NOTE: For the next client you will need to copy the client2.crt and client2.key files to prevent issues later.
