Is there a difference between web hosting and web server?

January 27, 2010 web server hosting 3 Comments

I am looking to transfer my website from a friends to a server of my own. Not sure what the difference is between hosting and server. Also would appreciate any recommendations.

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation.

The term web server can mean one of two things:
1. A computer program that is responsible for accepting HTTP requests from web clients, which are known as web browsers, and serving them HTTP responses along with optional data contents, which usually are web pages such as HTML documents and linked objects (images, etc.).
2. A computer that runs a computer program as described above.

Hi
I have read about different web hosting services available, but not sure of the best server to host my site. Among the normal requirements essential for the site, I would also like to avoid external spams, ads and want the best service that is available.
Could anyone help me in this regard.
Thanks,
Raja

Go with www.frevety.net. They have an amazing deal. Get 600gb monthly bandwidth, 75000mb of storage, and host up to 25 different web sites for just $90 every 14 months (that’s $6.43 per month). They list it as $7.50 per month, but then they later throw in another 2 months. Best deal anywhere hands down. Their customer support replies within 30 minutes every time as well!

what is the difference between a DNS server and a web hosting server? Are both of them same?

what is the difference between a DNS server and a web hosting server? Are both of them same?

They’re not the same. A web host will usually have one or more servers devoted to hosting sites, and at least one DNS server. The hosting servers are where your website is stored when you pay them to host your site.

A DNS server or Domain Name Server is part of a huge database spread out across the Internet. Any time you visit a site by typing in a name, like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com, the DNS server converts that name into an IP address.

The reason is simple. Computers communicate over the Internet using IP address, nothing more, but IP addresses are difficult to remember (209.85.135.99 for www.google.com and 87.248.113.14 for www.yahoo.com). DNS allows you to use human-readable names instead. The DNS server resolves the name to a computer-friendly IP address and saves you the trouble of remembering.

Copy the IP addresses for Google and Yahoo and paste them in your browser’s address bar. They work just like a URL. They’re just not as easy to make sense of.
