Can anyone recommend software to maintain a newsletter database of 3,500 emails, no hosting, needs to be local

April 3, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

I don’t want to pay someone to maintain our list, it’s small enough for me to send out. But I’m having a hard time keeping track of unsubscribers, etc. So we’re looking for something to help us manage the list internally. I’ve looked at fee and open-source stuff, but haven’t found anything other than programs that have to run on the Internet.

Thanks in advance for any/all help!

Scott

For 3500 subscribers you are going to need a database as such. Most software uses MySQL and you need to load this on your own web site server.

I have two pieces of software that install on your own web site. One can be seen here:http://www.clikkmarketing.com/email_powerpack.html

and one here: http://www.clikks.com/ebooks/autoresponder.html

The first one is the more powerful one. Both will send out your emails at a defined time and automatically handle your unsubscribers.

Otherwise you are going to have to set your own MsAccess database up – it may struggle a bit with the volume that you have.

Try elance.com for some one to do this for you if you can’t yourself.

Is there any issues with regards to importing an old wordpress mysql database to a new one?

March 30, 2010 database hosting 2 Comments

I imported my old wordpress mysql database to a new database in my hosting account, then deleted the old one. The site’s showing up ok, as of now. So i’m wondering if I missed any step during the importation that might pose as a problem in the future. Did I do right?

Assuming your host is the same, your site/domain is the same, and the structure didn’t change, everything should be fine.

The WordPress database is very stable and easy to move, even from site to site. Like the other answer says, as long as your site is working, you’re probably going to be just fine.

Anyone know how to link a microsoft publisher web page to a SQL database? My hosting is Siteground.com.?

March 28, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

If you’re talking about an HTML page, you can’t. HTML "ruins" (it’s actually interpreted) in the browser; the database is on the server; and they’re not connected. You need a programming language, running on the server, that connects to the database and creates the resultant HTML code to send to the browser, with the data already embedded in the page. If you really want to do it, I suggest that you learn PHP or Python. (PHP is available on just about every existing web server, Python is slowly becoming available.)

1&1 Hosting MySQL Database over ODBC (or ADO.NET)?

March 19, 2010 database hosting 3 Comments

I have a beginner hosting plan at 1&1, and would like to create a MySQL database that I can use to manage contact lists. I would like to create a desktop program to do this, but as I cannot connect to this database directly via ODBC, I was wondering if there is any PHP software I can install on my server space that will allow me to connect to this MySQL database directly from a desktop (probably VB.NET 2008 Win Forms) application.

Thanks for your help!

I’m not 100 percent sure about what 1&1 allows on its servers, but I do know that they do not allow remote connections. The only way I can think of to have a desktop application that manipulates a database on a hosting company like 1&1 would be to write a web service (if they allow it) that has the necessary code to manipulate the database. But this would be very code intensive. So not only would you need to write the desktop application, but also write a fairly complicated web service to act as an interface to MySQL on their servers.

No doubt, a daunting task

ASP Access Database Connection Problem in hosting plan ?

March 15, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

I have more than 5 portal hosted on Shared Hosting, in all portal i am using asp access database connection. In every 5-15 days it seems problem for data connection (Internal Server Error 500)
My hosting provider is claiming that asp access can not handle mask user, is it, what should i do ?

You can ask the provider to give a more user friendly HTTP error. This would get you out of the guessing game. If there service is bad find a better provider. There are thousand of them.

Is it possible to have your MYSQL database in a server different to the one that hosts your website?

March 13, 2010 database hosting 4 Comments

Is it possible to have your MYSQL database in a server different to the one that hosts your website? i.e., database in different hosting company/server . Or do both website and database have to been on the same server for the website to use the database??

Yes , it is possible.
You will need to change a security for a user to allow mysql access from remote machine and in connect clause use the server name instead of localhost. I have not seen any hosting providers which would allow this.

How do I add a searchable database to my web site?

March 6, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

Also, who offers free database hosting?

Zoho Creator does both. It offers free searchable online databases (unlimited data) that you can embed into your website. Your visitors can search by any field (e.g. name, year, location) as well as sort by any field (e.g. by year instead of by name). To add data, you can do it using a form (in fact, your visitors can add data too, if you want them to) or paste your existing data in (literally…cut and paste from Excel and it plops it all into a database).

In other words, Zoho hosts it, but it lets you look like you’re hosting it yourself, by letting you paste it into your website (it doesn’t even keep its logo.)

Check it out: http://creator.zoho.com/

It’s completely free, and if you have any problems or questions, the tech support is really good.

You don’t have to know anything about coding, either.

Good luck!

how can i upload an existing mysql database to yahoo web hosting?

February 28, 2010 database hosting 2 Comments

I have an existing databse of roughly 249 tables with hundred sof thousands of rows of data. I am trying to get this uploaded to our mysql databse through yahoo hosting. Is there any scripts or programs that I can load to do this?

nope. not really

do a dump of your data and tables from your current mysql database to a txt document

Yahoo should offer you an interface (ie phpmyadmin) to access your mysql database. if they dont, then download that invaluable program and install it in your webspace.

then upload (or import) your dumped data to your new mysql database.
