Are common web hosting services like Godaddy the same as shared web hosting services?

Hi,

I want to know if Godaddy, HostGator,… are considered as shared servers or there are differences between mentioned services and a shared web server.

Thank you

I can only answer for GoDaddy as I’m a client. Yes. It’s shared hosting unless you purchased a dedicated hosting plan which is $$$

What is the difference between shared and dedicated hosting and which is best?

April 29, 2010 hosting shared 3 Comments

Shared hosting means several sites use the same machine, share the cost, and share available CPU/bandwidth. Some have, monthly upload/download limits per site, one of my favorite sites got shut down at the end of the month- two months running, until they switched servers.

Dedicated hosting mean you have sole use of the machine, pay all the costs, but get all the CPU time and internet bandwidth.

Which is better depends on what you need it for and what you can afford, most sites don’t need dedicated.

If I’m going to have a site with large file downloads-should I get shared, VPS, reseller, or dedicated hosting?

April 27, 2010 hosting shared 3 Comments

Basically, I’ll be having a site that will have around 5-6 large file video downloads….would shared hosting work for this?

Shared hosting is fine. Get the cheapest thing you can find because downloading files takes no resources off the web server. Dedicated is where no other websites, except yours, is on the server. If you have complicated php or .asp web pages that use a lot of resources to process all the information, then the dedicated would be idea in this situation.

You’ll want to research and see how much bandwidth (how many mb’s you’re allowed to send over the internet) and how much is costs if you go over.

any Web hosting experience " I want to ubgrad my shared hosting to dedicated hosting" ?

April 23, 2010 hosting shared 3 Comments

I want to upgrade my shared hosting to dedicated hosting ? do i lose any thing of my hosted content , i mean if i changed my website shared hosting to dedicated what may happen to my website page .
i am UPGRADING to dedicated hosting not moving to new server , (is there any difference in that !) any way i am just paying 3$ over the shared hosted price 4.30$ .

Well, if you moved from shared hosting to a dedicated hosting machine, then you will be on a different computer. You can send an email to support and ask them to archive your site and copy it to the new machine. I’m sure they will do it beings that dedicated hosting is lots of money. But I wouldn’t trust it. I’d connect to the machine and copy the files via FTP program to your computer just in case. You can get an old copy (free) of WS_FTP from http://oldapps.com

Not really sure why you’d want a dedicated machine for a website. If you’re using it as a gaming server, then I can see why. But just for a basic website, the price doesn’t outweigh the benefits of being on a dedicated machine.

Shared hosting or Dedicated hosting (which is more common?)?

April 20, 2010 hosting shared 1 Comment

I offer shared web hosting with packages that range from free to unlimited for less then $5. To me that seems like a great deal to host a website but I am wondering how many people use dedicated servers or virtual private servers instead and pay anywhere from $20 to $150.

Do you pay more then $5 for hosting? and why?

because dedicated is a lot faster and more secure and easly upgradable to high specifications, and can also change what version of windows, linux runs on it.

Why does shared web hosting offer unlimited bandwidth but dedicated servers or VPS hosting does not?

April 18, 2010 hosting shared 6 Comments

Just curious why you don’t get unlimited data transfer if you’re paying A LOT more for a dedicated server or virtual private server.

shared hosting providers usually have their servers on an unmetered line, which will be shared among their many clients. You could get an unmetered line for your dedicated/VPS, but it would cost you a real lot.

Dedicated email hosting?

April 14, 2010 email hosting 2 Comments

Anyone know of any dedicated (preferably free) email hosting service?
My purpose is to set MX records of my own domain to a server, and use pop3/smtp from there.
I’ve used free webhosting with email hosting attached, but I have yet to find a service dedicated to email. No webmail needed.

Try Yahoo! Domains. They’re pretty cheap.

If you are upgrading with the same company that hosted your shared hosting, then a good hosting company should help you make a nearly seamless transition.

Even if you have to handle the transition yourself, I’m not sure why you’d lose anything. All of your databases, content, etc. should be in folders accessible to you, so you should be able to download everything before you shut the old service down and copy files to the new server as needed.

How do I change my nameserver to my new dedicated hoster?

March 30, 2010 123 hosting 2 Comments

I am finally moving my (usually) high-traffic site from its inadequate hosting to a dedicated server.

Having already replicated the site at the new server, I now guess it would be prudent to transfer domain management and nameserving over to Fasthosts too (they are renting me the dedicated server). My current hosting is with 123, and they hold the domain record too.

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW ALL THIS WORKS !!!! :S

C-NAMES, domain records, I am clueless. They are meaningless words to me. I have Plesk V9 on the new server but it comes with no instructions for the uninitiated regarding DNS records. I am no Linux/hosting nerd.

I have one successful site that I want to move to its own server, and that’s it. I would rather not have a successful site offline for weeks while I buy/read books and so I want to get this right first time.

Does anyone know of a web-guide for this process that is aimed at someone of my limited capabilities?

Thanks in advance!

I suggest you email the domain registrar and ask them to set the nameservers for you.

"If you need to re-set the nameservers for hosting with Fasthosts, set them to:

1st nameserver: ns1.livedns.co.uk
2nd nameserver: ns2.livedns.co.uk
3rd nameserver: ns3.livedns.co.uk"

I am looking for a web hosting company that will allow my site to scale up with traffic. Do you know of any?

Basically i want to pay for the bandwith my site uses. I looked into Amazon cloud computing. But could not figure out how to host a Tomcat application in there. Any suggestions ? thanks

You could start with http://www.slicehost.com
They plans start from $20/month, and since it’s a VPS hosting you can install whatever you want.

They have a lot of plans, so you can easily upgrade, and since they were recently acquired by Rackspace they’ll probably make it very easy to switch to their dedicated hosting later on.
