Are common web hosting services like Godaddy the same as shared web hosting services?

Hi,

I want to know if Godaddy, HostGator,… are considered as shared servers or there are differences between mentioned services and a shared web server.

Thank you

I can only answer for GoDaddy as I’m a client. Yes. It’s shared hosting unless you purchased a dedicated hosting plan which is $$$

Can I put PHP into my index.html page in a shared hosting environment on GoDaddy?

April 28, 2010 hosting shared 4 Comments

I’m hoping there’s a file I can stick into my file system that will tell the shared hosting that in my directory .html documents can run PHP scripts. Right now I have to rename them index.php and that’s going to really be a problem on my site. Does anyone know a way to change that setting?

yah you can try doing it in a .htacess file , you would prob have to put it in every folder that you want this to work

add this to an existing .htacess file or make up a text file, name it .htaccess, add the following:

DirectoryIndex index.html
AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php

you may need this too………..

<Files *.html>
options execcgi
SetHandler cgi-script
</Files>

hope this helps

I want to start a web host!?

April 27, 2010 rack hosting 3 Comments

Hey Yahoo techies,

I want to start a hosting company and I need to know where and what to buy for a server that has similar quality as server on BlueHost, GoDaddy, and 1and1. To help you organize an answer, here’s a list.

1 Server Parts
a. CPU
b. RAM and amount
2. Server Rack
3. Storage Databases
4. Host Control Panel
5. XAMPPS to install MySQL, PHP, Mercury, etc.
6. High Speed ISP (Which ones? I live in Irvine, CA)

I have no idea what brands and hardware specifications I need. Please tell em what parts I would need and which ones are best or adequate for a Host. Is XAMPPS and a CPanel License all I need to install??

So is that all I need? Let me know if I need anything else to run a web host company! Software, Hardware, or anything at all. I do plan on having a office location to run the Host, it’s not from home.

Wamr Regards,
Jason
I’m not blindly leaping. I am just uncertain about everything I need, and I am taking classes. I also have quite a few acquaintances who will help manage it for a cut. I am just here to get the rundown on equipment mainly. Anyone give me a list please?
I do have stock actually, Stocks and Bonds Net worth plummeted from $460k to $138k recently. I also do architectural design and have had some fun doing a few car designs. I also own a few businesses. Just trying to learn what I need to know so I can hire people who know what they’re doing to manage everything. I don’t want to blindly hire people and appoint people to buy random parts that end up DoA or low performing.

You need to add things like:

Data Center equipped or compatible building.
Clean room for the data center/NOC.
Underground diesel storage tank(s) for backup generator.
60-100Kw Diesel generator for backup power.

It isn’t just high speed Internet access.
Most Data centers have redundant OC-12s or larger.

And Jason, once you know what you need, you need to have someone who is actually experienced and well qualified to run all of it.

When I see someone with limited technical knowledge wanting to leap head long into a technical project of this type of magnitude, it reminds me of George of the Jungle. Watch out for that …. TREE!

It seems to happen a lot and the results are pretty predictable.

You’d have better odds of success playing the stock market especially lately.

You’ve driven a car. You may even know a few models of cars really well. You’d have better odds at creating a new automobile corporation than at creating a web host.

Edit at 12:26AM PDT.

Jason $3 Million US Dollars might get you into the start up of this type of arena. Sky Dayton had considerably more than that when he started Earthlink. It was merely an ISP. I was his 34th employee at Earthlink. Sky had significant positive cash flow from the Internet Cafe in Los Angeles.
If you are really serious, you can hire my services as an expert consultant. For this I would charge you $600 per hour during normal business hours. Off hours rates are considerably higher. I do not take shares in lieu of payment.
Getting involved in something you know nothing about IS blindly leaping.

How to choose a free web hosting site for my domain?

After I paid for a domain from godaddy, I found out its web hosting prices were not good for me. I want one that is free. It’s gonna be just a small personal website to publicize myself and no intention of business. There are so many of them out there. What should I look into to decide which one to choose? There are a few subquestions:

Is it a common practise for free hosting site to charge for the domain transfer fee?

Does free webhosting site provide support for the basic designing of my homepage? (I knew nothing about Microsoft Frontpage or Dreamweaver…)

If I dislike it, is it possible for me to switch to other hosting sites without losing any of the content on my page?

For the type of web host you are looking for I suggest this one

http://www.000webhost.com/224273.html

I have been using 000webhost for sometime now to host my two sites and I never have had a problem with them. It is very much a legitimate company and it has a lot of happy customers.

Now to answer your sub-questions…

Is it common for a free hosting site to charge for transfer of your domain? No, because most free web hosts don’t support this feature, they have FREE domain hosting but no domain transfer; this is the case with 000webhost, they will host your domain for free but you have to change your nameservers on godaddy for the domain to be pointed to 000webhost.

Does free web hosting provide support for the basic web designing of your page? With most yes, they have site-builders to help you with your page and you don’t have to know a line of code whatsoever. with 000webhost they have an on-site, site bulder which is fairly easy to use but a little more complicated than say webs.com or something like that.

If you dislike it, is it possible to change to a new web host? Well of course its possible. with 000webhost you can download backups of your website from your control panel (which is helpful because you won’t be saving a copy in dreamwever or coffeecup)

I promise you that 000webhost is the way to go if you are looking for a reliable and steady free web hosting service.

I have never seen a web hosting company cheaper than 1 dollar per month. I think you should be careful though, notice how one thing that isn’t on that list is any kind of customer service?

If you have a problem, you will be out of luck. Go with godaddy or something that costs a few dollars more. I like godaddy because there is always someone you can call if you need help with anything, and they speak english.

Website creation and Webhosting Questions?

I know a little bit about website development and have made a few in the past. But some of them I paid a company for the template and then I just maintained the site. But this time someone asked me to make one and it has to be kind of similar to ebay or craigslist so I need some questions answered.

1) Is Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 the best program to use at my skill level for creating websites? Or are there other more simple programs. (I have used FrontPage quite a bit but it is unavailable for a free trial version and I don’t really want to invest 200-400$ at first for this website seeing as this idea might not hit off.)

2)Once I do get my website done, I read that you have to get someone to host it? (My employer has already bought the url off godaddy) How exactly do I send my stuff to a webhost and then make daily or weekly changes to the website when needed? (This website idea is going to be ran from our homes. We don’t work for a big corporation that has its own servers)

3)Do you know of any good tutorials that can help me with a more advanced kind of site like ebay or craigslist?

1) Dreamweaver is probably a good choice to get started.

2) Yes, you will need web hosting. I recommend using a Virtual Private Server (VPS) type of hosting account. I use linode.com which starts at $20/m but there are many out there. With a VPS you get your own full operating system, and it seems to you like a whole server all to yourself, but really it’s run inside a virtualization container so they can run a whole bunch of them on one server. That gives you a lot of advantages, for example, you only have to pay for what you need, and when you need to upgrade, they can just change the settings so you have more CPU access, RAM, etc. without you having to change anything. Also it’s the lowest cost way to go. If you try to get cheaper, like the $5/m webhosts, you’ll find they have poor uptime, and a lot of hidden restrictions.

3) You will pretty much need to be doing more than just making a "web site" but rather, making a whole "web application." I recommend that you use RubyOnRails, because Ruby is easy to learn and makes sites like this a lot easier to build. That would also mean not using Dreamweaver, except maybe for the user interface. Instead you would use a program editor such as RadRails or Netbeans. If you choose Ruby, I recommend the book Agile Web Development with Ruby.

Another alternative is using Perl or Python. You could use PHP, which is easier for the baby steps, but making a large web app in PHP can often be more difficult than using other languages.

Expect to sink a large number of development hours into a site like this.

Also I advise not to worry about the way the site looks until after you have all the features working, otherwise you can work on it "forever" without getting it working.
