Simple web hosting that is inexpensive yet trustworthy?

I am looking for a company that will give me servers to practice PHP & MySQL training. Something that is inexpensive, or free, and is an honest company. Any suggestions?

There is nothing simple about choosing a hosting company. What versions of PHP and MySQL do you want? Do you need PHP to be configured as an Apache module or will FastCGI be OK? Do you expect to make use of mod_rewrite and .htaccess files? Do you need access to php.ini?

For example, one of the posters above suggested GoDaddy. Their pricing is affordable, they let you choose between PHP 4 and PHP 5 (on per-directory basis, if necessary) and between MySQL 4.1 and MySQL 5.0. You can use .htaccess files and even create your own php.ini. The downside is, their PHP is configured as a FastCGI executable, so you can’t do HTTP authentication with PHP (although you can use .htpasswd files to compensate for that); also, mod_rewrite doesn’t work with their PHP installation the way you would expect it to if it were an Apache module installation (the implication being that some popular applications, such as WordPress, can’t do pretty, or even semi-pretty, URLs).

More importantly, if all you want to do is practice, there is no better place for it than your own computer. You can run PHP and MySQL on either Linux or Windows. You can run PHP with either Apache or IIS. PHP and MySQL can be downloaded free of charge from their respective developers’ Web sites. There are also installation kits that install and configure Apache, PHP, and MySQL on Windows.

I want to start a web host!?

April 27, 2010 rack hosting 3 Comments

Hey Yahoo techies,

I want to start a hosting company and I need to know where and what to buy for a server that has similar quality as server on BlueHost, GoDaddy, and 1and1. To help you organize an answer, here’s a list.

1 Server Parts
a. CPU
b. RAM and amount
2. Server Rack
3. Storage Databases
4. Host Control Panel
5. XAMPPS to install MySQL, PHP, Mercury, etc.
6. High Speed ISP (Which ones? I live in Irvine, CA)

I have no idea what brands and hardware specifications I need. Please tell em what parts I would need and which ones are best or adequate for a Host. Is XAMPPS and a CPanel License all I need to install??

So is that all I need? Let me know if I need anything else to run a web host company! Software, Hardware, or anything at all. I do plan on having a office location to run the Host, it’s not from home.

Wamr Regards,
Jason
I’m not blindly leaping. I am just uncertain about everything I need, and I am taking classes. I also have quite a few acquaintances who will help manage it for a cut. I am just here to get the rundown on equipment mainly. Anyone give me a list please?
I do have stock actually, Stocks and Bonds Net worth plummeted from $460k to $138k recently. I also do architectural design and have had some fun doing a few car designs. I also own a few businesses. Just trying to learn what I need to know so I can hire people who know what they’re doing to manage everything. I don’t want to blindly hire people and appoint people to buy random parts that end up DoA or low performing.

You need to add things like:

Data Center equipped or compatible building.

Clean room for the data center/NOC.
Underground diesel storage tank(s) for backup generator.
60-100Kw Diesel generator for backup power.

It isn’t just high speed Internet access.
Most Data centers have redundant OC-12s or larger.

And Jason, once you know what you need, you need to have someone who is actually experienced and well qualified to run all of it.

When I see someone with limited technical knowledge wanting to leap head long into a technical project of this type of magnitude, it reminds me of George of the Jungle. Watch out for that …. TREE!

It seems to happen a lot and the results are pretty predictable.

You’d have better odds of success playing the stock market especially lately.

You’ve driven a car. You may even know a few models of cars really well. You’d have better odds at creating a new automobile corporation than at creating a web host.

Edit at 12:26AM PDT.

Jason $3 Million US Dollars might get you into the start up of this type of arena. Sky Dayton had considerably more than that when he started Earthlink. It was merely an ISP. I was his 34th employee at Earthlink. Sky had significant positive cash flow from the Internet Cafe in Los Angeles.
If you are really serious, you can hire my services as an expert consultant. For this I would charge you $600 per hour during normal business hours. Off hours rates are considerably higher. I do not take shares in lieu of payment.
Getting involved in something you know nothing about IS blindly leaping.

Do you know if the hosting company 1&1, supports asp if i have a microsoft package?

April 18, 2010 microsoft hosting 1 Comment

this one site that provides asp forums won’t send me an e-mail confirmation so i can ask them.

Microsoft supports ASP – it’s not really something the host has to support. (They can turn it off, but it’s assumed that Windows hosting gives you ASP and Linux hosting gives you PHP.)

Reliable honest website hosting company with unlimited shared hosting?

April 17, 2010 hosting shared 8 Comments

I have found that most of these are fly by night operations. Please does anyone have any 99.9 up time with GOOD tech support that is at a reasonable price?

Would you say $4.95 for one full year of hosting is reasonable? For me it is darn cheap.

There is a crazy promotion going on this month (July 2009) where you can get an Unlimited storage/bandwidth Linux hosting plan from a reliable host for only $4.95. I think it is worth the risk even if you have not heard about this web host.

I pasted the links in the source below.

Have fun.

Better to host from a local company?

April 11, 2010 123 hosting 2 Comments

I have an issue here. I have the .com and .co.uk domain names and i live in the united kingdom. I want good search engine rankings.
Should i get hosting from an American company like "hostgator" or a british one "123 reg"?

You asked a very important question!
You should make that decision on where you want your clientele or visitors from.
Example: America clients go with american hosting company
UK clients go with Uk hosting company

I believe search results shift to the area you are from

*If you are trying to build clientele from both countries, I would suggest having both domain names pointing to your website.

What are the benefits of a small business hosting their own email server?

April 6, 2010 email hosting 2 Comments

What are good reasons for a small company to not use free web mail services like google or yahoo mail.

By hosting your own server you have complete control of everything. Companies I worked with chose to do this so they knew what was going on with the server at all times – they didn’t have to worry about a fire, explosion, theft, etc. I’ve worked with a hosting company that had an explosion in their server room – and our server was down for over a week. Usually, something like this is the reason a business will decide to host their own server.

I strongly recommend against doing this if you’re a small business. If you set up your hosted server correctly, you can have back-ups and redundancy plans without having to invest in purchasing the email server, software, IT personnel, etc.

which company has best email hosting service and is reasonable in price?

April 5, 2010 email hosting 4 Comments

I recommend you to setup Google Apps for your domain.

http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/index.html

All you need is the domain name and you let the google host your email. So you basically get a gmail account (up to 50 email addresses totally free) but with your own domain (like me@mysite.com othermail@mysite.com somethirdmail@mysite.com…). You also get a calendar, simple website and a lot more. And if you want to use some email client like Outlook or Thunderbird and not the gmail web app, you can. POP3 and IMAP are also supported. Check them out. This is a much better solution than any hosting company offers.
