Could you help me with buying a domain, hosting the website, and using Microsoft Publisher?

April 29, 2010 microsoft hosting 4 Comments

I have purchased a domain at godaddy.com. It comes with free shared hosting. Will there be advertisements on the site? If so, how can I host it so there won’t be any?

Is buying a domain enough? Or do I need to host it somewhere? What does hosting mean?

In Microsoft Publisher I have developed my website with video and text. On each page I have changed the "Web Page Options" so it has the description and keywords to help people find the site through search engines. Then I have saved it under "Publish to the Web…" and I assume I will later upload that to the hosting server? I am not sure how I load the site to the web, how the hosting works, etc.

I need your help understand the role hosting plays, how that works, and its relationship with advertising. I want no ads on the site. Any further comments on what to do in Microsoft Publisher are appreciated.

Thanks!
In response to cailano it’s an htm file.

And as for the video in Publisher, I first loaded the wmv file to YouTube and pasted the embed code in a box called "HTML Code Fragment" in Publisher.

"hosting" is someone providing dedicated server space to your website. For a professional site, you should look into paying someone. Generally this is around $5 per month, but the host usually changes several months or a year up front. A good host is www.startlogic.com

Your host will usually provide a few extras, too. Such as a built in FTP service, lots of email addresses, that sort of thing.

For something built in publisher, you probably don’t need anything fancy at all. There are supposedly some servers you can post to that are free and don’t have advertising, but I don’t know from personal experience. I never wanted to worry about it, so I just cough up my $60 / year and have a site. Paid hosts never place advertising on your site.

As for Publisher, it sounds like you’re on the right track. You want to publish all your files and directories to your host server. Most hosting companies will walk you through the process when you’re ready.

Check those published files. Do they all have an extension of .html or .htm? Is there a separate folder with your images in it?

Publisher does video? Sweet!

any Web hosting experience " I want to ubgrad my shared hosting to dedicated hosting" ?

April 23, 2010 hosting shared 3 Comments

I want to upgrade my shared hosting to dedicated hosting ? do i lose any thing of my hosted content , i mean if i changed my website shared hosting to dedicated what may happen to my website page .
i am UPGRADING to dedicated hosting not moving to new server , (is there any difference in that !) any way i am just paying 3$ over the shared hosted price 4.30$ .

Well, if you moved from shared hosting to a dedicated hosting machine, then you will be on a different computer. You can send an email to support and ask them to archive your site and copy it to the new machine. I’m sure they will do it beings that dedicated hosting is lots of money. But I wouldn’t trust it. I’d connect to the machine and copy the files via FTP program to your computer just in case. You can get an old copy (free) of WS_FTP from http://oldapps.com

Not really sure why you’d want a dedicated machine for a website. If you’re using it as a gaming server, then I can see why. But just for a basic website, the price doesn’t outweigh the benefits of being on a dedicated machine.

Help needed with CRONTAB on linux shared hosting. How do I access the CRONTAB?

April 23, 2010 hosting shared 2 Comments

I have a job that needs to run on a daily basis. My server is a shared hosting server which means I cannot see any files other than my own. I have various CGI scripts running within my own area of the server.
To edit the CRONTAB I need to know how to access it. Where is it? I do not have any tools available to activate a LINUX based command line or direct access to the cgi-bin.

Do I need a script? Access to the server? or just a plain miracle.

I have contacted my host and they keep sending instructions. But most assume a level of knowledge of LINUX beyond the realms of normal Windows people.

Please don’t copy and paste web pages that state ‘Access the crontab -e" – I think I have read them all and still do not know what on earth they are talking about when looking at my server/control panel.

Those crontab -e commands are things you should run from an ssh command prompt. Not all shared hosting gives access to ssh. If your control panel has no options for scheduling/crontab, then email your host and ask them for ssh login capabilities. Many will give that to you if you provide some ID (scan and email)…

Email or hosting server provider with SERVER-SIDE spam protection with the challenge question feature?

April 13, 2010 email hosting 4 Comments

I’m sick of waiting 20 minutes for my oulook to download 1,000 spam a day. Is there a hosting provider out there that provide spam blockers on the server side so I only download white-listed emails?

They would also have to have the challenge question feature so that people that weren’t whitlisted knew that their email wasn’t received and they have a chance to get through. It should also have a reviewable junk folder… but server side.

Any one know of such a website and/or email service provider like that? (Yahoo’s SpamGuard plus doesn’t have challenge question)

check the downloads at http://www.pcworld.com for a free add on spam blocker. they have them because my U.Lester uses one. I’m not sure of the name but you can search the downloads.

Why when shared hosting moves to a new server nothing works like before?

April 3, 2010 hosting shared 1 Comment

I had this problem before with another hosting and it’s happening again with this new one.
The downtime increases a lot after they move to another server…website data frequently returns to outdated points in the past…
Basically it’s not worth anymore when its supposedly to be better in this new server?

Hi,

There’s complexity involved when moving to a new server especially when it requires IP and DNS changes. You could take the matter in your own hands and either get a fully managed dedicated server or a virtual private server (cheaper). This way your web site is not prone to decisions that are beyond your control.

Let me know if you have any question or comment.

Regards

Do I need specific software/hosting for an ecommerce site?

hosting must provide server side scripting, database server and preferrably asp.net

they will provide you with the database so all you need to to design your page.

these people have reasonable prices and good service

Email hosting on a remote server?

March 29, 2010 email hosting 1 Comment

I’m really hoping this is possible and if someone can tell me.
I’m going to get a server pretty soon, and its running Windows Server 2008. I have webhosting with 1&1. Does anybody know a way to set email servers to go somewhere else (eg. the server)
If i have to move webhosts, i can do that.

You just need to create a new MX record with your host. It’s pretty simple and takes about 48 hours to update throughout DNS

What is the best web hosting service that supports ASP.NET and MS SQL Server?

March 15, 2010 asp.net hosting 11 Comments

I’m a professional web application programmer, but I have to admit that I don’t know much about hosting or server tech.

I’d like to have someplace to host my personal projects and attempts at marketable websites. I already have hosting that uses php and mySQL, and while I can get by using those technologies, I’d much prefer to work with ASP.NET and SQL Server, like I do at work.

Also, I’m currently paying $7.95/month for 1500 GB of storage and 5200 GB transfer. That same price would only get me 200 GB of storage and 1000 GB transfer with a host that offers ASP.NET and SQL Server. Should I expect to pay through the nose if I want to use these technologies?

I’d suggest you go with a web host that specializes in both ASP.NET and MS SQL. Lunar is the best one I’ve found, and the one I suggest to my clients.

Here’s a review – http://www.website-hosting-reviews.net/lunarpages.html

There’s a coupon for lunar on the front page of – http://www.website-hosting-reviews.net/

Good luck!
