Could you help me with buying a domain, hosting the website, and using Microsoft Publisher?
I have purchased a domain at godaddy.com. It comes with free shared hosting. Will there be advertisements on the site? If so, how can I host it so there won’t be any?
Is buying a domain enough? Or do I need to host it somewhere? What does hosting mean?
In Microsoft Publisher I have developed my website with video and text. On each page I have changed the "Web Page Options" so it has the description and keywords to help people find the site through search engines. Then I have saved it under "Publish to the Web…" and I assume I will later upload that to the hosting server? I am not sure how I load the site to the web, how the hosting works, etc.
I need your help understand the role hosting plays, how that works, and its relationship with advertising. I want no ads on the site. Any further comments on what to do in Microsoft Publisher are appreciated.
Thanks!
In response to cailano it’s an htm file.
And as for the video in Publisher, I first loaded the wmv file to YouTube and pasted the embed code in a box called "HTML Code Fragment" in Publisher.
"hosting" is someone providing dedicated server space to your website. For a professional site, you should look into paying someone. Generally this is around $5 per month, but the host usually changes several months or a year up front. A good host is www.startlogic.com
Your host will usually provide a few extras, too. Such as a built in FTP service, lots of email addresses, that sort of thing.
For something built in publisher, you probably don’t need anything fancy at all. There are supposedly some servers you can post to that are free and don’t have advertising, but I don’t know from personal experience. I never wanted to worry about it, so I just cough up my $60 / year and have a site. Paid hosts never place advertising on your site.
As for Publisher, it sounds like you’re on the right track. You want to publish all your files and directories to your host server. Most hosting companies will walk you through the process when you’re ready.
Check those published files. Do they all have an extension of .html or .htm? Is there a separate folder with your images in it?
Publisher does video? Sweet!
