Could you help me with buying a domain, hosting the website, and using Microsoft Publisher?

April 29, 2010 microsoft hosting 4 Comments

I have purchased a domain at godaddy.com. It comes with free shared hosting. Will there be advertisements on the site? If so, how can I host it so there won’t be any?

Is buying a domain enough? Or do I need to host it somewhere? What does hosting mean?

In Microsoft Publisher I have developed my website with video and text. On each page I have changed the "Web Page Options" so it has the description and keywords to help people find the site through search engines. Then I have saved it under "Publish to the Web…" and I assume I will later upload that to the hosting server? I am not sure how I load the site to the web, how the hosting works, etc.

I need your help understand the role hosting plays, how that works, and its relationship with advertising. I want no ads on the site. Any further comments on what to do in Microsoft Publisher are appreciated.

Thanks!
In response to cailano it’s an htm file.

And as for the video in Publisher, I first loaded the wmv file to YouTube and pasted the embed code in a box called "HTML Code Fragment" in Publisher.

"hosting" is someone providing dedicated server space to your website. For a professional site, you should look into paying someone. Generally this is around $5 per month, but the host usually changes several months or a year up front. A good host is www.startlogic.com

Your host will usually provide a few extras, too. Such as a built in FTP service, lots of email addresses, that sort of thing.

For something built in publisher, you probably don’t need anything fancy at all. There are supposedly some servers you can post to that are free and don’t have advertising, but I don’t know from personal experience. I never wanted to worry about it, so I just cough up my $60 / year and have a site. Paid hosts never place advertising on your site.

As for Publisher, it sounds like you’re on the right track. You want to publish all your files and directories to your host server. Most hosting companies will walk you through the process when you’re ready.

Check those published files. Do they all have an extension of .html or .htm? Is there a separate folder with your images in it?

Publisher does video? Sweet!

Are most ecommerce sites able to be integrated with Flash, or do I have to search for specific hosts? Also, does anyone have any recomendations for webhosts, nothing to expensive, I just need something basic and affordable.

What eCommerce shopping cart hosts do you recommend?

I own my own cookie business, baking & selling cookies. I’ve just now reached a point where I’m ready to start taking orders online and would like to setup a shopping cart on my site.

Which vendor shopping carts are the best for my type of business? Initially, I will only sell about 15 items, but will expand in the future. Also, international selling isn’t a concern at the moment.

Ideally I’d like one that I walks me through the process with a wizard.

I would suggest the following:

1. Go to http://www.GotHosting.org and purchase hosting.
2. Once your account is setup, you will be able to go into the control panel they provide to install a free cart system.
3. Sign up for a paypal account (free at paypal.com).
4. Put your paypal email in the admin panel of the system you install i.e. zen cart. This will allow you take payments online.

Hope that helps.

Is there anyone out there who can recommend a good way to sell mass quantities o Creative Memories products?

March 25, 2010 creative hosting 3 Comments

I am really trying to earn this years incentive trip and have the recruiting thing down but I just don’t have the time to do parties and my hosts always cancel on me.

Does anyone have any insight on flea markets or other places like that? I have to sell $15000 in products in 6 months to earn my trip. Any help??

Have a BIG SALE! Talk a loss or sell at cost. Call all your clients personally to let them know. Also, send them a reminder postcard. You could also hold an event at your house a night or two. Kinda like those scapbooking conference events…..offer specials for attending. If the trip is that important too you, that is what you should do. Company policy does not permit you to put them on ebay so I wouldn’t go that route and risk loosing your status with CM.

I used to be a Creative Memories consultant. I am interested in knowing what the requirements for the trip is and what level you are. Oh, and where is the trip!!! I really found it hard to make a profit. And the requirements to stay active became too much. WIth all of the cheaper products out there it got really hard. I admit they are the best scrapbooking products out there!!!! I just found my cost and the cost to my clients was not affordable.

Good Luck

Does this sound like a good web host?

March 22, 2010 123 hosting No Comments

www.123-reg.co.uk

I’ve made a basic website and I want to put it online.
Hey Wolf. If you happen to come across this question again can you email me and tell me why you think Streamline.net is your recommendation. Just that I’ve heard some pretty shitty reviews.

I’ve never used them as a web-host as I always thought they were a little bit expensive.

However, the cheap hosts do go broke quite frequently where as 123-reg have been partnered with webfusion hosting for a long while now.

Incidentally, 123-reg is mainly a domain registrar (and a very good one too) however their minimum registration period is now 2 years – It used to be one (and thus cheap).

Good honest company – have done secure transactions with them many times.

Yahoo webhosting offer for small businesses. Unlimited text and photos?

Just wanted to know if , once you have bought this offer, you can then design your online webpage with as much text and photos as you like, or are you limited to a certain number of web pages?
Thanks!

Hostamina.com is probably a better option, just in case yahoo has some sort of limit (but I doubt they do).

You should avoid hosts that offer "unlimited" space/bandwidth as this is somewhat of a scam. You should also avoid hosts that offer ridiculous amounts of space/bandwidth, such as 10GB space for only $5/month. Hosts like this overload and oversell servers, and are bad news for anyone who wants reliability.

You should also avoid answers here that send you to review sites, as those sites make money off commissions and rank hosts based on how much money they’ll get paid, not on how good they are. You should avoid answers here that look like they are affiliate links as well, for the same reason.

Hostamina.com is exactly what you need. Support is great! They will help you set up your website, and they will provide you with any help you need. Note that I am not using an affiliate link or sending you to a review site.

http://www.hostamina.com

-They provide awesome personalized support
-They know how to handle all your business needs
-They never oversell
-They never overload servers
-They offer realistic plans
-You actually get what they say you get
-There is no fake "unlimited" space or bandwidth
-There is no fake "50,000 GB" space or bandwidth
-They will help you with anything you need help with
-They will put you on a super fast server
-Every server has at least dual quad core processors
-Every server has at least 4GB of RAM
-Every server has strict account limitations
-Most companies average 300 accounts per server
-Hostamina averages 100 accounts per server
-Instant Shopping Carts, Blogs, Forums, PHP-Nuke, Joomla, and more!

what is the best website hosting for models?

hey guys, i need to know whats the best website hosting for models. i already tried homestead but its not mac compatible…and im using a MACBOOK, and tried blue host…but i didnt like it…its too complicated. so please helllppp!!!

i need:

+paysite
+webcam live
+store
+mac compatible
+ easy to edit
+easy
any suggestions?

I just checked out the BlueHost details, I am an affiliate.

They use Cpanel, the industry standard control panel. If you are not comfortable with that, then chances are very good that you will not be happy with 95% of other hosts either.

You’re probably be in good shape with a $3-$5/ month host that is reliable. They are out there.

This next step will save you money. Find a website that is similar to what you’d like to have. There are lots of entry level web designers that will not charge you much, and will be able to duplicate the site that you do like with some minor modifications.

As a model, I would assume that the most important part of your site will be a single or multiple image galleries. Most servers will have this available as a simple install that any basic designer with half a brain can work with.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you could find a designer to copy a site, change a few images, and give you a quick lesson on how to update things yourself for under $100.

As for the Mac, if the design and maintenance are all done online, it should be compatible. (Some designs are flawed and mess up on different browsers.)

My $0.02

How do I add a searchable database to my web site?

March 6, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

Also, who offers free database hosting?

Zoho Creator does both. It offers free searchable online databases (unlimited data) that you can embed into your website. Your visitors can search by any field (e.g. name, year, location) as well as sort by any field (e.g. by year instead of by name). To add data, you can do it using a form (in fact, your visitors can add data too, if you want them to) or paste your existing data in (literally…cut and paste from Excel and it plops it all into a database).

In other words, Zoho hosts it, but it lets you look like you’re hosting it yourself, by letting you paste it into your website (it doesn’t even keep its logo.)

Check it out: http://creator.zoho.com/

It’s completely free, and if you have any problems or questions, the tech support is really good.

You don’t have to know anything about coding, either.

Good luck!

Can anyone recommend a good email hosting service?

March 5, 2010 email hosting 8 Comments

I would like to send and receive email from myname@mydomain.com. I already own mydomain.com and do not wish to transfer it to a new registrar nor swap DNS servers, just to make the necessary changes to my MX records. Can anyone recommend a reliable, trustworthy and good value provider who will provide POP3/SMPT services for me on this basis, as it seems this sector has more than its fair share of sharp practitioners.

When you sign up with a new hosting service, you’ll need to change the nameservers at the registrar so your domain name points to the server.
There are loads of reputable hosts out there.
I’ve used Bluehost and have no complaints. I’ve also used Kwikhosting and Netfirms. I’m about to sign someone up on Siteground.
Some registrars have hosting as well, like GoDaddy.

Any idea about a relatively cheap & good quality web host with ColdFusion support?

Or maybe an honest and independent web site for comparing hosts?

I think http://www.cfhosting.com is cheap and good quality
