Hosting a microsoft exchange server…?

April 25, 2010 microsoft hosting 1 Comment

Hello,

We have a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server environment with approximately 8 Windows 2000 servers and 80 workstations.

We are not running Active Directory or any domain based policies. Its a simple network really. We currently use Outlook 2003 with POP3 email that is hosted by our ISP.

We want to deploy Microsoft Exchange server so that Outlook 2003 can use more advanced features like calendaring, etc. We need to also have Outlook Web Access.

Do we need to convert to active directory, or can I do this without having to convert right now?

Please advise … thank you!

You must have active directory to use exchange server 2000 or 2003. It is not very difficult to install active directory especially if you don’t plan to use group policies but if you do decide to deploy it I would recommend using a 2003 server as the domain controller as there are many improvements to active directory from 2000.

How dO I secure a public web server?

April 17, 2010 rack hosting 3 Comments

I’m going to take the chances again, and open up my servers for web hosting.

Im part of a lot of hacking websites. They hack forums and shi*.
Well, I don’t really know how to secure my website..
They do have a company, Rack Security. Is there anything else like that? It can secure my server again DoS (Denial Of Service) attacks?

Help meee plz..

Thanks

Well, I think you need a firewall. Better buy adsl from good ISP. Like BT in UK. they have firewalls and do not allow hacking. As this will not only take your server down but they will also experiencing problems.

I hope you understand my point.

Hosting business critical applications and Web site?

Hello,

We are planning to start a small business in which we will be providing various solutions like Cloud Computing and SaaS. We are a bunch of java professionals (i.e around 11 java professionals) and would like to start a small business. Our main problem is that we want to host all our business critical applications for our clients online and in-house but we really do not know where to start from. Since some of our applications are business critical, we do not want to rely on the ISP. What we want is the complete control on our applications and database. Could anyone please help us.

If it is so critical, you have no other choice but to set up your own server(s). This is rather expensive, as you have to be PHYSICALLY linked to the web backbone (the fibre optic infrastructure). Usually, these are provided by the country major telephone company. If you are physically close to a telephone exchange, that may not be too hard!

hi, please help show me the best hosting/delicated server companies in singapore?

I need the best quality hosting/server companies in singapore.I don’t care the price. Thanks for your help

The best quality hosting/server companies do not exist in Singapore. In fact, your choice of hosting packages are limited. There is a fallacy that if your traffic is predominantly local, then you should use local hosting companies.

From traceroutes which was tried to connect from a local PC to a locally hosted server, the details will show that the ISP usually routes traffic over hobs based on its own pgp routing tables and the traffic can go all the way out of country, across the world and then back locally.

So, there is no difference if you are talking about response.

You should go for reputable and comprehensive packages which allow you to upscale as and when your website becomes more mature in its usage and traffic.

A main-stream hosting company is http://hostgatorhost.pinurl.com

This hosting company has great user testimonies and you can upscale your hosting package as and when your hosting needs increase.

Of course, there are other hosting companies around but you have to ask yourself what you really looking for. Price or performance or price-performance for value worth.

Think about it.

Hosting Access Database at an ISP?

March 9, 2010 database hosting 1 Comment

I have created a simple database using Microsoft Access for "adding" records. its workin fine for my office. now im opening another office elswhere. can ISPs be able to host this database even though its made of access? id use mysql but i dnt have the sofwtare. i want records to be enterd at both offices and the data should update automatically.. please help. its urgent

If your ISP provides hosting and a hosting package would include MS Access database, then you could. Otherwise you have to find a hosting provider who offers Access database access. The same thing applies to MySQL. In case the hosting provider – for YOUR website – provides a MySQL database you can utilize this as well. Additionally you could download the free community edition of MySQL and then you would have the software, too.

regards connecting two locations you could check out this answer from answers.yahoo.com. It may give you useful clues.

How do I start hosting my applications In-House.?

February 23, 2010 application hosting 2 Comments

Hello Folks,
Could you please let me know the pro’s and con’s associated with Hosting In-house. We run a SOHO and desire to host our mail applications in-house. We look forward to securing Internet Service via Satellite to run it.
What may we need and what’s is it to be aware of?

Make sure your ISP permits traffic on at least port 25. Point your DNS MX record at your external IP (which may change – ask your ISP if they offer service that includes a static IP, which’ll prolly cost extra)

Use port forwarding on your router to forward port 25 from your router to your mail server. If you’re going to be checking mail from clients outside your house, look into what ports need to be open for the clients. (I believe POP uses 110. Not sure what IMAP uses.)

Make sure you’re running a SMTP/mail server and perhaps a POP/IMAP server.

…just some things to look into.

How to move a website hosting?

February 19, 2010 123 hosting 3 Comments

I have three websites that are all built (by me) through a company called ‘Mr Site’. I would like to try building them myself via a program I’ve bought called ‘Website x5′ (Incomedia).

What I don’t understand is how to get the website addresses back from Mr Site. I originally bought the names via 123 Reg, and then I think they were transferred to Mr Site when I bought a ‘website package’ from Mr Site. It’s time to renew my website hosting package with Mr Site, and I don’t want to. But if I don’t – who gets the names? How do I transfer the names to me??

In other words, I own three website addresses which are currently being hosted through Mr Site. If I don’t renew with them, how do I get the names from them? How do I host my own site?

I hope this makes sense, and thank you for your help!

Well, the Domain names belong to you for the period prescribed by the contract you signed with whoever you got them from. Check to see how long you own them for, and you can renew that separately in most cases, or transfer it to another web host. I know Dream Host has a service for this. (Dream Host is the best host I have ever used.) As for transferring your site, you just need to download all of the files you have on the server, and then re-upload them to a new server of your choosing.

If you want to host your own site, and this is from your own machine at home I assume, you first need to read through your ISP’s terms of service. Most of them have specific notes forbidding running your own webserver. You might have to pay to upgrade your account through them. If you have all of that set up, it’s as simple as installing some form of freeware web server software on your machine, I recommend WAMP, mainly because of the simplicity and the wide range of plugins that you can get for it. Once you have that installed, just forward the port 80 on your router to the machine running wamp. I’ts really a simple process. I did it that way for quite a few years!

Hope this helps!
